15. What date is today ?

a note

¡¡

J¨©nti¨¡n Jĭh¨¤o ?

" Jĭh¨¤o " means what date. With exception for date, where, " jĭ " covers dates from the first to the 31st, other than numbers limited to 1 to 9 in most other situations. " X¨©ngq¨© ", literally, means "constellation cycle " or week which also known as " weekly worship " in parts of China especi-ally where Wu dialect is spoken. To say the day of the week, use the pattern:
[  x¨©ngq¨©  ]+[  No. 1 ~ 6  ]
. Sunday is " x¨©ngq¨© ti¨¡n " or " x¨©ng-
q¨© r¨¬."

What day is Saturday?

" What day is Saturday ? " or " what day is worship 6 ? " in a blending of putong hua and wu vernacular is almost a classic joke about the confusion over which is the right term for a day of the week. The " weekly wor-ship " concept is so deeply rooted in wu dialect speakers and most people are comfortable with it even when speaking putong hua while speakers of the northern vernaculars are not likely to use " workshop 1 ~ 6 ". And there is a number of people who don't live
by the week.
